Meticulous

Continued from part IV.

Tuesday, the 16th of Januari 2007, she came back and I would finally execute my plan. A plan I had drawn some time before. A crazy plan. A meticulous plan. A plan that is probably the beginning of something bound to fail but this year I’m letting go of my “trying is the first step towards failure” motto which has not brought me very much last few years.

The Sunday before we (me and my brother) were (as usual) at the Efteling and I finally bought that plush lynx that I had my eyes on for a few weeks now. This time however I was ready to give it to her. My plan was to leave it (wrapped) on her desk together with little note on a nice card.

The next day my brother and I went to our parents and after a few hours of digging I was able to find a nice enough card (japanese drawing of sparrows on a rice weed) in my mom’s card collection. The cards fits me pretty well because I’m both a bird (I especially like sparrows because they are becoming somewhat endangered nowadays) and Japanese freak. After finding a reasonable envelope in the same box I was ready to fail. Continue reading “Meticulous”

Meticulous

Continued from part III.

So when new year had come and gone I was psyched up and drunk enough to send her a text message. So I texted her with a new year’s wish and a little personal message and a short while later I even got a reply message back… This sparked some (too much) self confidence and a few hours later, deep in the night, I sent her another message. To that, there was no reply.

At the start of my vacation the silence was deafening so a few days later I sent her another message assuming she was at work. Still no reply so I assumed she was either back to her home country or very pissed with me about coming on to her out of the blue. When my vacation was finally over I found out she indeed went back for the holidays so that somewhat explained why she didn’t reply.

During my vacation I logged on our shop’s network to find out if her vacation would be mentioned on the public agenda but it wasn’t. So upon my return I went down to our lovely secretaries and bluntly asked when she would be back. Somewhat surprisingly I got an instant answer so I could begin planning my next move. I even dared to ask the return date of another female collegue (the other girl). They did not even ask me why I wanted to know this but being women I guess they knew I was up to something.

Meticulous

Continued from part II.

During my vacation I spent a good deal of the first week fighting with myself to commit to either one of those girls and show some action for once. The first thing I did was to place myself in a different perspective, not the undeserving pitiful piece of human that was but a I-can-do-everything-if-I-want-to kinda guy. From this perspective I can accomplish everything and it solves a few loose ends but then there is the question of whom to pursue.

You suddenly find yourself in an awkward situation because when you deem yourself all-capable; there are some difficult decisions to make. For me though, the decision was pretty much made – I just had to convince myself. “There was that evening though, when she danced. That was unbelievable.” So yes, the dancing did it even though I remained ever in doubt.

Please

While I start a sequence of posts about women and emotions. My blog is usually tech oriented but since the new year has started something in me has become disturbed. I have started to lose a few of my bad habits and am also thinking about quitting smoking. Yes, it is that serious but although I could lose the cigarettes without a lot of problem it would take a lot more to give up the herbs completely. Continue reading “Please”

Missing

Even though I do not really know her that well I seem to miss her a lot. At least six months she was near (and I did nothing) but two weeks without her was like hell. When I turned up at the shop again she was not there. Back to her home country to celebrate Christmas which meant another week of self pity for me.

Next Tuesday she will be back (hopefully) but I have not got a clue of what I should do or say. I am too afraid she will slap me right in the face for messaging her out of the blue during our new year. Continue reading “Missing”

Shame

A while ago I blogged about Binsor, Boo configuration for Windsor and did not even noted that Jay. R. Wren, the lazy dawg everlast, quoted me on the matter. I must admit I feel honored by this but also very stupid that I only picked up on it just now. Sorry about that Jay but I’m subscribed now and I will enjoy catching up on your massive archive with my first coffee during the quiet wake-up hours at the office. Continue reading “Shame”

FreeBSD

Due to the upgrades my pkgdb.db file became unrecognizable halfway during execution of the portupgrade -a command so I had to do a rm /usr/ports/INDEX-6.db and a rm /var/db/pkg/pkgdb.db and finally a portupgrade -a again to make everything right.

On top of that my mousewheel seems to have ceased working again so that probably means a good few hours of experimenting with all kinds of esoteric programs and parameters until the magic combination for my particular setup is found – I can’t wait… Continue reading “FreeBSD”

WordPress

Yep it is running and I still can not believe how smooth the upgrade went. I went up from 1.5 to 2.0.4 and followed the upgrading guide in the codex and aside from the backing up (which was not really necessary after all because all went well) there was nothing more involved than executing five simple steps:

  1. Dowload WordPress
  2. Deactivate all the plugins
  3. Delete some files and directories on the server
  4. Upload the new stuff
  5. Click a link

And that was it! I have been using WordPress for all my blogging needs since even before blogging became common fashion and every time I am just utterly amazed at how smooth an installation or upgrade goes. It seems it just can not fail – at least not in a nasty way.

I just love this software and now that the admin is pimped 2.0 style I love it even more. Continue reading “WordPress”

Meticulous

Today I found something (look at the bottom of the FAQ) on google that worries me: meticulous geeks of the opposite gender.

Let me be very clear on this: there is only one meticulous geek and that is me. It is bad enough that I take such pride in being one but it seems we now also have women proudly proclaiming to be a “meticulous geek”. Look at Katie Siek, for instance, in her FAQ:

Q: This website and the reference writer database is a little much.
Why did you do it?

A: Because I am a hard core, meticulous geek :).

This cannot be good. Continue reading “Meticulous”
